Criminal Law Internships

Each year we host one intern from Osgoode Hall Law School's Intensive Program in Criminal Law. That student is invited to attend with senior lawyers of the firm at all aspects of the criminal trial process including pre-trials, client meetings, and the trial itself. Intensive students are also encouraged to gain experience handling simple set-date court appearances and may be asked to hone their research and writing skills in support of a file.

Summer Student Positions

ABP does not generally hire summer students although we have occasionally created short-term positions to assist in the preparation of particularly large and complex cases.

Articling at Adler Bytensky Prutschi

Each year ABP engages in the Law Society of Upper Canada's (LSUC) hiring process to fill a single Student-at-Law position. Please check with your law school or LSUC to determine the specific requirements and deadlines associated with the program annually.

ABP articling students are exposed to every facet of criminal litigation. Our practice is weighted primarily towards trial work with a secondary focus on appeals. Students will work on a broad mix of files from impaired driving and domestic assault to complex homicides and frauds. Daily attendance in court is common for set-dates, motions, pleas, and pre-trials. Outstanding skills in legal research and writing are required as students are expected to prepare legal memoranda, applications and facta on both trial and appellate matters. Students will also be given the opportunity to carry a small compliment of files on their own thus giving direct exposure to case management and trial work.

Students will work primarily for the firm's partners while also assisting associates in the office to a lesser extent. Direct client contact both in and out of court is strongly encouraged.

ABP views its students as the firm's future potential. Although we do not hire back a student in every year, several of our associates came to the firm through our articling program and we are committed to sustainable internal growth as our practice develops. For this reason, students can expect an unusual mixture of superb mentoring coupled with significant independence and responsibility. In addition to learning about "the law", students will gain vital business development and management skills not taught in any law school that are key to their future success in any criminal law practice. We believe our articling program not only trains great students, but builds extraordinary associates and partners.
